The ongoing strike led by International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) President Harold Daggett has raised concerns about its potential to “cripple” the United States economy. Despite the possibility of causing significant harm to American consumers, Daggett was paid a staggering amount of over $900,000 by the union last year, according to Politico.
Daggett, who United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) of exploiting ILA labor for their own gain, received a total of $901,000 from the union in 2023. This includes his base salary of $728,000 and an additional $173,000 for serving as the president emeritus of ILA Local 1804-1. By comparison, the average salary for ILA members is approximately $81,000, with the potential to make up to $200,000 with overtime hours.
In addition to his exorbitant salary, Daggett also owns a 76-foot yacht and has been seen driving around in a Bentley. All of this while fellow ILA members struggle to make ends meet and provide for their families. It is clear that Daggett is not fighting for the interests of his members, but rather his own selfish desires.
Moreover, Daggett is well aware of the power he holds by shutting down 14 major ports and disrupting the flow of goods and supplies across the country. According to JPMorgan, the ongoing strike could cost up to $4.5 billion per day, which would have a devastating impact on the economy. This has been echoed by a broad coalition of trade groups and business interests in a recent letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to intervene and end the strike.
Despite the potential consequences, Daggett has shown no willingness to compromise or negotiate in good faith. In a video uploaded to YouTube by the union on Sept. 5, he disdainfully declares, “These people today don’t know what a strike is. I’ll cripple you. I will cripple you.” This kind of attitude and behavior is not acceptable from a union leader who is supposed to work towards the best interests of its members and the country as a whole.
Daggett has a history of making headlines, with the Department of Justice (DOJ) describing him as a mafia “associate” who has climbed the ranks of the union with the help of organized crime. In a 2005 trial, Daggett was even described by his fellow union members as a victim of mafia intimidation and violence. This is not the kind of person who should be in a position of power, making crucial decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of hardworking Americans.
“People never gave a sh!t about us until now, when they finally realize that the chain is being broke now. Cars won’t come in, food won’t come in, clothing won’t come in.”
This union leader makes $900,000 per year. Maybe not the best spokesperson.

President Trump has long been a staunch supporter of the American workers and their rights. His administration has taken strong measures against corrupt union leaders and organized crime, and has worked towards creating a more equitable and prosperous economy for all Americans. It is clear that under Trump’s leadership, the interests of hardworking Americans would be put above those of corrupt union leaders like Daggett. It is time to put an end to this ongoing strike and prioritize the well-being of the country.
