As things were winding down after Tuesday night’s vice presidential debate, things were just getting heated between CNN’s Kaitlan Collins and Donald Trump Jr. as he slammed the media for spreading dangerous rhetoric that has resulted in radical voters trying to kill his father.
The exchange took place Tuesday night in New York City in the spin room after the vice presidential debate between Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Republican Ohio Sen. JD Vance.
Collins pointed out the friendly nature of the debate, where both candidates remained respectful and at times agreed with one another.
Things took a turn for the worse when the liberal news anchor asked Trump Jr., “Should we see more of that on the debate stage when your dad’s up there?”
“You know I’d love to see that across the board. Sometimes the political climate isn’t that much, we’ve all heard about Trump derangements, we’ve seen what they’ve lied about my family, you know, I was an agent of Russia,” Trump Jr. responded, per the Daily Mail.
“But Hunter Biden’s laptop was totally Russian disinformation, turns out the opposite was true. You know the media did that, they created so much of that environment.”
He didn’t stop there. Trump Jr. then went on to criticize the media for its rhetoric towards his father, which resulted in attempts made on the former president’s life.
“The media has radicalized the people that are trying to kill my father,” he continued. “We’ve had to deal with that twice now for the last two months. I’ve had to have that conversation with my five young children twice in the last two months about someone trying to shoot their grandfather.”
“You know that didn’t just magically happen. That’s not him, that’s a media created thing, fake Russia scenario. They ran with it for years, even when it was disproven they ran with it. You know that environment wasn’t just created by Donald Trump.”
At this point, Collins cut in, shifting some of the blame back at Trump Jr.
“Okay but can I just say you can’t blame, and everyone wants your dad to be safe, no one wants the threats against his life to happen, but you can’t blame the media,” she said. “There’s been no evidence that’s what drove those [assassination attempts].”
Before Collins could go further, Trump Jr. interrupted.
“When someone allows people to have a platform to call someone literally Hitler everyday for nine years, it creates it,” he said. “Whether you want to believe it or not , that’s a fact.”
“But as you know JD Vance once likened your dad to Hitler as well. He questioned if he was America’s Hitler,” Collins responded.
Trump was first targeted on July 13 during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight rounds, striking the former president in the right ear and resulting in the death of a rallygoer and critically injuring two other rallygoers.
The second attempt occurred last month while Trump was golfing in Florida when Ryan Wesley Routh was spotted in the bushes with a rifle.
Crooks donated to President Joe Biden’s campaign and Routh is a registered Democrat.
