Trump is gaining Latino support, according to recent polls. Kamala Harris is still leading 54 percent to Trump’s 40 percent according to Sunday’s NBC poll.
This suggests that the Democrat’s edge over Hispanic voters is at the lowest level in the last four presidential election cycles and almost 20 points less than just four years ago.
While Latino voters back Trump over his economy and his plan to reduce the cost of living, Kamala Harris has the advantage among them in regards to how they perceive her temperament, competency, and mental and physical health assessments, according to the poll.
Overall, the poll shows that Harris has lost some ground with Latinos.
While her 14-point advantage is an improvement from President Joe Biden’s it is still lower than the past leads Democratic presidential candidates have mustered in 2012, 2016, and 2020.
Also, Latino voters lean 54 percent Democrat for Congress control and 42 percent Republican – a much tighter gap than in past years concerning presidential elections.
Accelerating the Latino gap between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are Latino men under the age of 50 and those without college degrees. Democrat support among Latino women stands firm according to the NBC poll.
The poll surveyed 1,000 Latino voters nationwide in English and Spanish which revealed a shocking split on immigration between those who prioritize pathways to citizenship for non-citizens and those who demand border control.
62 percent of Latino voters believe immigration helps more than it hurts vs. 35 percent who think it hurts more than it helps.
Aileen Cardona-Arroyo of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the poll with Republican pollster Micah Roberts and his team at Public Opinion Strategies stated: “Latino voters are incredibly diverse. It can’t be overstressed. We are looking at Latino voters rather than a consolidated Latino community.”
This poll also asked Latino voters which candidate is better at protecting immigrant rights, securing the border and fighting crime, as well as dealing with abortion issues, the economy and the rising cost of living.
Findings reveal that Harris +39 over Trump on immigrant rights, +32 over Trump on abortion, and +5 over Trump on crime.
Trump has the advantage over Harris concerning the economy (+4), the cost-of-living crisis (+9), and securing the border (+13).
One Latino man who was polled, Victor Gutierrez, aged 62 and residing in New Jersey said that he is “leaning toward Trump because I believe he has a better grasp on what to do as president” due to his stances on the economy and border security.
Overall, according to the poll, when it comes to personality, likeability, and leadership, Harris remains in the lead. When it comes to having the necessary mental and physical health, she leads +25 points. She also leads in being honest and trustworthy at +26 points as well as representing change at +21 points.
Latino voters prefer the Democrat Party but that Democrat advantage declines 11 points when Latino voters are asked which party shares their values, per the survey.
