Netflix saw a spike in subscription cancellations after its co-founder donated several million dollars to Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, according to Bloomberg.
Reed Hastings endorsed Harris shortly after she jumped into the race in July, and he donated $7 million dollars to a super PAC supporting Harris’ campaign, The Information reported. Netflix’s rate of cancellations nearly tripled following the support, according to Bloomberg, citing data from Antenna.
Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took to social media after Hastings’ donations became public to announce that they had disabled their Netflix accounts, posting the hashtag #CancelNetflix, Bloomberg reported.
Netflix customers in the U.S. canceled their subscriptions at a 2.8% rate in July, which is partly due to the streaming platform getting rid of their cheapest subscription, according to Bloomberg.
Hastings was one of the first among other major tech founders to announce their support for the Harris campaign.
“Congrats to Kamala Harris — now it is time to win,” Hastings said in a July 23 post on X.
President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race on July 21 and endorsed Harris. The decision came after a disappointing debate performance and several House Democrats calling for him to step aside from the race.
Harris currently leads Trump by 2%, polling at 49.1% to his 47.1%, according to RealClear Polling averages from Sept. 11 to Sept. 25. While Harris leads Trump 54% to 40% among Latino voters, the former president is ahead 13-points on who they believe would better handle border security and immigration, according to an NBC/Telemundo/CNBC poll released Sunday.
Netflix did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
