An 18-year-old Missouri man called 911 late Saturday night and told dispatchers he’d just his father and fled the scene on foot.
According to a probable cause statement obtained by Law&Crime, the gunshot awoke the wife of the victim, 41-year-old John McMurphy, who said she walked into the hallway and found Carter Joshua Curtis, who handed her a rifle and said, “I already called 911 and I had to do it.” Carter left the house, and McMurphy’s wife found him face down on the kitchen floor with a gunshot to the head.
The Bates County Sheriff’s Office said deputies took Curtis into custody a block away from the home in Adrian.
The sheriff’s office said that McMurphy was Carter’s adoptive father but did not explain the relationship with McMurphy’s wife.
Curtis was charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action and is being held without bond.
