House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) has subpoenaed DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for records relating to Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) and his alleged ties to the CCP. The demand comes as Republicans deepen their investigation into Walz’s frequent travels to China, which have raised concerns about his stance on foreign policy.
A whistleblower informed the committee of a DHS group chat that contains pertinent information about Walz’s alleged China connections. Comer’s investigation also includes Walz’s involvement with the Hormel Institute, which has partnered with the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Comer has requested unredacted materials from Mayorkas regarding these connections.
Comer stated that this investigation predates Walz’s nomination as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, pushing back on claims that it is politically motivated. He stressed that any involvement between a US state governor and the CCP is a matter of national security.
Walz, who visited China over 30 times and organized student trips to the country, is facing increasing scrutiny from GOP lawmakers who worry that his extensive interactions with Chinese officials may influence his decisions on US-China relations if elected.
The committee has scheduled Mayorkas’ testimony for October 7, where he will be asked to provide additional intelligence and communications involving Walz. This marks a significant escalation in the GOP’s efforts to investigate China’s potential influence on US politicians.
