As Election Day 2024 draws near, two new polls have revealed that former President Donald Trump is gaining massive support from Hispanics, a group that is known to lean left.
A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University showed that in a four-way contest, Trump held an eight-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris with Hispanic voters, with 52 percent to 44 percent.
In a head-to-head matchup, Trump still led with 52 percent, compared to Harris’ 46 percent.
The poll indicated that on a national level, Trump and Harris are essentially tied, as their support falls within the 2.4 percentage point margin of error.
The survey, conducted from Sept. 19 to Sept. 22, included 1,728 likely voters nationwide.
Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy stated that the election “remains too close to call,” with Trump receiving 48 percent and Harris receiving 47 percent. He said that the outcome may hinge on which side can better mobilize its supporters at this stage.
“On the backstretch of the race to Election Day, all eyes are on which candidate can best stoke their supporters’ enthusiasm all the way to the finish line,” he said. “A slight shift suggests the Harris crowd is not roaring as loudly as it was last month.”
In a poll conducted by NBC News/Telemundo/CNBC, Harris was leading among Hispanic voters, but with the lowest amount of support for a Democratic candidate in the past four presidential elections, according to NBC News.
The poll showed Harris with 54 percent support from Hispanic voters, compared to Trump’s 40 percent, while six percent of voters said they were unsure or were not voting this election.
When asked about the economy and inflation, Trump received more support among Hispanic voters. Of those polled, 54 percent said that the economy and the cost of living were the main issues this election, the outlet noted.
Since 1972, Democrats have had the Hispanic vote in every presidential election, except in 2004, according to the New York Post. Since 1992, Democratic candidates have consistently outperformed their Republican rivals among Hispanic voters by a margin of at least 35 points.
Abraham Enriquez, founder of Bienvenido, said that Trump’s focus on the economy has gained him more support from Hispanic voters.
“Two-thirds of Hispanics on the voter rolls are second- and third-generation Americans, meaning that we are assimilating to American culture better. English is predominantly our first language,” he said, per NBC News.
“Most of us have college degrees, and we care more about policies that uplift economic opportunity, rather than be bunched into what the Democrats would like to be focused on, which is these illegal immigration talking points that they think that Hispanic voters care about.”
California voter Matthew Delao, 60, said that he was voting for Trump because he feels that Democrats are “just giving away so many things to people who shouldn’t need it.”
He added that the next president “should concentrate on the United States, concentrate on your own people.”
