During a video address on the occasion of “Reunification Day,” Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed that the embattled nation will achieve all of its envisioned goals in Ukraine.
Knewz.com has learned that the 71-year-old autocrat’s statement came shortly after a massive Russian airstrike targeting Kyiv and nearby areas—which Ukraine claims was thwarted by its air defenses.
“Reunification Day” is the occasion to celebrate the annexation of four southern and eastern Ukrainian regions by Russia in 2022.
It has been pointed out, however, that although Russia claimed to annex the Ukrainian regions of Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson in September 2022, Moscow does not fully control any of them.
Addressing the nation, President Putin said in the video message, “The truth is on our side. All goals set will be achieved.”
During his statement, Putin also justified his Special Military Operation in Ukraine, saying that he was protecting Russian speakers against a “neo-Nazi dictatorship” that aimed to “cut them off forever from Russia, their historic homeland”—presumably referring to the collaboration between Ukraine and Nazi Germany during the Second World War.
“Together we are defending a safe, prosperous future for our children and grandchildren,” Putin added.
Currently, Russia is desperately bolstering its assault efforts in eastern Ukraine, while trying to fend off invading Ukrainian forces on its own side of the border.
Putin’s vow to emerge victorious in the Ukraine war came a few hours after Russia launched a massive airstrike on Kyiv and its surrounding areas overnight on September 30.
Although Ukraine managed to thwart the Russian aerial assault involving both drones and missiles, air raid sirens rang across Kyiv for over five hours.
The Air Force of Ukraine reported that it tracked a total of 76 “aerial objects” after midnight on September 30, including one Iskander-M ballistic missile launched from occupied Crimea, one Kh-59/69 guided air missile from the direction of Zaporizhzhia, one Kh-31P anti-radar missile from the airspace over the Black Sea, and 73 Shahed-type attack drones from the Kursk, Yeisk, and Orel regions.
“The air attack was repulsed by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups of the Air Force and the Defense Forces of Ukraine,” the Air Force wrote in the report.
“As a result of anti-aircraft combat, one Kh-59/69 guided air missile and 67 enemy attack UAVs of the ‘Shahed’ type were shot down in the Kyiv, Cherkasy, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, Zhytomyr, Poltava, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolaiv regions,” the report further stated.
Notably, Putin’s statements also followed his meeting with the nation’s security council the previous week, where he laid down the ground rules for what would trigger a nuclear response from Russia against Ukraine—and possibly its allies as well.
While the West deliberated giving Ukraine the go-ahead to use foreign weapons to attack targets deep within Russian territory, Putin stated that such an attack would be seen as a “critical threat” to the country’s sovereignty and prompt the use of nuclear arms by Russia.
He stated that Russia would be forced to push the big red button if Moscow gets “reliable information” about the start of “mass cross-border attack by air from strategic and tactical aviation, cruise missiles, drones, and hypersonic weapons.”
“It is proposed that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, be considered as their joint attack on the Russian Federation,” Putin added in his statement.
Notably, Kyiv believes Putin’s statements from the previous week were nothing but “nuclear blackmail.”
