Attempts to fight with Russia are suicidal: Lavrov’s main statements at the UN General Assembly session
Lavrov said that the United States is preparing Europe for a suicidal adventure against the Russian Federation
September 28, 2024
Lavrov declared the senselessness of “suicidal attempts” to fight to victory with the Russian Federation
At the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke about the futility of conducting military operations against Russia, emphasizing its status as a nuclear power. He also called on countries offering peace initiatives to resolve the conflict in Ukraine to take into account the root causes of the crisis. These and other statements of Lavrov — in the article URA.RU.
The suicidal adventure of the West
Sergey Lavrov expressed the opinion that London and Washington are setting Europe up for a conflict with Moscow, which he described as a “suicidal adventure.” Lavrov mentioned that there is a goal to hit Russia strategically, comparing the current intentions with the secretly developed “Unthinkable” plan in May 1945, which aimed to destroy the Soviet Union. The minister noted that unlike in the past, modern Anglo-Saxon strategies do not hide their intentions and, although they currently expect to defeat Russia with the help of the Kiev regime, which he called neo-Nazi and illegitimate, they also prepare Europe for participation in this conflict.
Nord Stream investigation
The Russian Foreign Minister stressed the need for the UN Secretariat to participate in the investigation of incidents such as the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines and the events in Bucha. Lavrov expressed the opinion that the Americans are trying to deny their involvement in the incidents and hide the facts, similar to what they did in the case of the “Nord Stream”.
He also accused the West of trying to hide the truth about various crimes, including the provocation in Bucha and the poisoning of Russian citizens. Lavrov pointed to the duty of the UN Secretariat to act impartially and avoid supporting the interests of individual countries, in accordance with Article 100 of the UN Charter, especially in situations affecting global security.
Threats from NATO
Lavrov expressed concern about the actions of NATO, which, in his opinion, are aimed at strengthening its positions in the Transcaucasia, Central Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, which poses threats to Russia’s security. He pointed out that the alliance has been expanding over the past three decades, creating direct threats to Russia’s security and undermining the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region. The Foreign Minister also noted that the West blames not only Russia, but also China, Belarus, North Korea and Iran for creating threats to its dominance.
Undermining trust in the UN
Lavrov criticized the UN Secretariat for promoting Western narratives and undermining the organization’s credibility. He said that if the Secretary-General calls for a reset of global cooperation, then the Secretariat should promote unification and offer compromises, rather than justify narratives that benefit the West. According to him, to inspire a new life in the UN, it is necessary to restore trust based on the principle of sovereign equality of all states.
The diplomat also mentioned the actions of the West to create formats controlled by it to address important issues, such as Internet governance and the legal framework for the use of artificial intelligence technologies, which undermines trust and bypasses the UN. He expressed gratitude to the partners for their efforts to promote mediation initiatives in Ukraine and noted the constructive approach in contrast to Zelensky’s “formula for peace”.
Israeli attacks on Lebanon
The Foreign Minister called for an immediate end to the killing of Palestinians who become victims using American weapons. Lavrov condemned the acts of terrorism that killed Israelis last year, but expressed outrage that the tragedy was used for mass collective punishment of Palestinians, which led to a humanitarian catastrophe.
He also raised the question of the alleged US knowledge of the preparation of an Israeli attack using mobile devices in Lebanon, pointing out the need to discuss the numerous media publications that testify to this. He stressed the importance of conducting an investigation into the recent attack on Lebanon, describing it as the inhumane use of terrorist methods to achieve political goals and the transformation of civilian technologies into deadly weapons.
