New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing several federal charges concerning his campaign contributions from 2021. The gifts allegedly include unlawful donations from foreign individuals and at least one official from Turkey.
The indictment includes five counts: conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and two counts of solicitation of contributions by foreign nationals, along with bribery.
It also alleges that Adams inflated donation figures in order to defraud the public matching funds program.
“As Adams’s prominence and power grew, his foreign-national benefactors sought to cash in on their corrupt relationships with him, particularly when, in 2021, it became clear that Adams would become New York City’s mayor,” the indictment states.
Adams has denied the charges, claiming they are false and based on lies.
“My fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes,” Adams said.
“If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies. But, they would not be surprising,” he added.
