GOP presidential candidate former President Donald J. Trump on Sunday repeated his insulting suggestion Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris was “mentally impaired.”
Trump made the comment during a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, after members of both parties and the American Association of People with Disabilities rebuked him for his such remarks.
Trump renewed his insults of Ms. Harris in a meandering speech at a convention center in Erie, after several Republicans had sought to distance themselves from his earlier remarks.
South Carolina GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham said on CNN that “the better course to take is to prosecute the case that her policies are destroying the country.”
Larry Hogan, the former Republican governor of Maryland who is running for Senate, said on CBS that Mr. Trump’s remarks were “insulting” to Ms. Harris and to “people that actually do have mental disabilities.”
Mr. Trump’s speech – which included attacks on President Biden and his oft-repeated false claims that he lost the 2020 election because of fraud – came hours before Ms. Harris was set to speak at a rally in Las Vegas, her second visit to Nevada since she rose to the top of the Democratic ticket.
There are 37 days remaining before Election Day.
