An Iowa anti-toxin blogger pleaded guilty on Thursday to poisoning her husband with eyedrops.
Daisy Zantjer, 39, was initially charged with two counts each of administering harmful substances and domestic abuse assault when she was arrested in July following a year-long investigation, as CrimeOnline reported.
Eye drops’ active ingredient is tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant that can lead to drowsiness, low blood pressure, and slow heart rate. Zantjer’s husband was hospitalized in July 2023 for breathing issues but survived.
According to Law&Crime, Zantjer admitted putting tetrahydrozoline into her husband’s drinks twice that month.
Zantjer wrote several blog posts on LinkedIn a few years earlier warning about the amount of toxic chemicals in household products. Pleasantville Police Chief Jo Mrstik told Law&Crime at the time that the poster “appears to be” Zantjer.
Zantjer’s goal in those posts appeared to be steering consumers to use of organic products.
Zantjer’s sentencing is scheduled for November 7.
