A Democrat senator has an idea that would reshape The Supreme Court in a way that could damage the foundation of the United States.
Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden introduced legislation this week that would massively increase the size of the court, require Justices to be audited and remove roadblocks for higher court judges, The Washington Post reported.
The senator said that the idea of the legislation is to restore faith in the Court and even if his colleagues do not pass the entire law he would like to see parts of it passed.
“It’s not an atomic secret that the process for selecting justices is politicized,” the senator, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee, said. “You’ve got this thoroughly politicized process resulting in a Supreme Court that now frequently issues sweeping rulings to overturn laws and upend precedents. We are proposing a way to restore some balance between the three branches of government.”
“The bill’s most significant measure would increase the number of justices from nine to 15 over the course of 12 years. The staggered format over two or three administrations is aimed at diminishing the chance that one political party would pack the courts with its nominees,” the report said.
“During the rollout, each president would approve justices in the first and third year of their terms,” it said.
And to change a law passed by Congress it would require two thirds of the Court and the circuit courts of appeals.
It would also add an automatic vote on Supreme Court nominees in the Senate if their nomination has been sitting for 180 days.
“Another provision in Wyden’s bill would expand the number of federal judicial circuits from 13 to 15, adding more than 100 district court judges and more than 60 appellate-level judges,” the report said.
It would also require that the IRS audit the Justices every year and share their taxes with everyone, the Post noted.
