The discovery of an abandoned McDonald’s has the internet reeling.
X is abuzz not just because of the fast food location’s nostalgic ambiance, but because its 1994 prices can still be seen in the drive-thru.
If you wanted a reminder for how out-of-control food prices have become in America, just take a look at this:
The video showcases some shocking costs, including a Filet-O-Fish for $1.95, a happy meal sitting at just under four bucks and a Big Mac going for only $2.45.
The inclusion of “dino-size fries” is also turning heads, mainly because those were likely part of a promotion for the original Jurassic Park film.
“America is an unrecognizable country compared to the optimistic and energetic 90’s,” one X user said.
Another pointed out that coffee used to be only 25 cents, meanwhile one user highlighted the minimum wage in the 90s was roughly $4.50.
The abandoned McDonalds and its low prices in comparison to today is located on a remote Alaskan island where prices were inflated due to the costs of shipping.
As the clip of the drive-thru menu made its rounds on social media, X users were sure to emphasize that the world most Americans grew up in no longer exists.
Other retro videos of McDonalds have too made their mark on the internet showcasing this critical and sad fact.
Back in June, Resist the Mainstream covered a survey from LendingTree that revealed most Americans view fast food as a “luxury” nowadays.
The report, which surveyed over 2,000 American adults, uncovered a disturbing trend: rampant inflation has compelled millions to reassess their spending habits and how they view eating out entirely.
78 percent of respondents dubbed fast food a “luxury” because it’s become increasingly expensive.
46 percent said fast food restaurants cost “similarly to their local sit-down restaurants.”
22 percent said fast food is more expensive altogether.
Half of Americans said they view fast food as a luxury because they’re struggling financially.
The survey found that three in four Americans believe eating at home is cheaper than getting fast food.
This shocking discovery comes despite 67 percent of respondents believing fast food should be cheaper than home-cooked meals.
Texas Rep. Wesley Hunt blasted the Biden-Harris administration following LendingTree’s stunning findings.
“Ever since President Biden took office, the cost of eating out is up 22%,” he said. “Biden’s inflation is putting a burden on families, young people, and the working class.”
Former professor Peter St. Onge also shared his take on the news.
“A pre-pandemic Big Mac cost $3.99,” he said. “Now it’s $8.29.”
“A Chipotle burrito cost $6.50. Now it’s $10.70.”
He continued: “As you’d expect, this hits families with kids, the working class, and of course the young who once started families but now just doom-spend to the next bail-out.”
