Elon Musk has voiced his concern over a wave of chaos in Philadelphia, triggered by illegal street racing over the weekend.
According to Philadelphia police, these incidents took place at multiple locations across the city, starting at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and continuing into the early hours of Sunday morning. The gatherings involved large crowds and 50 to 200 vehicles at each site.
Videos from the scenes depicted cars drifting in circles, fireworks being set off, and trash fires burning. Some of the most alarming footage showed mobs vandalizing police vehicles, with people swarming and stomping on a police cruiser.
Commenting on the situation, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to draw a comparison with the 2019 film “Joker.” In response to a video showing a police car surrounded by a massive crowd, he remarked, “Pretty sure I saw this scene in The Joker.”
The video had been posted by the House Judiciary GOP account, which added, “You’re not safe in Democrat-run Philadelphia.”
In “Joker,” a key scene shows the Joker riding in the back of a police car as Gotham City is consumed by riots and chaos. At one point, he stands on a crashed police vehicle, surrounded by a cheering mob, much like the scenes described from Philadelphia.
Conservative influencer Joey Mannarino also weighed in, comparing the situation to another pop culture reference. “Philadelphia basically looks like a game of Grand Theft Auto now,” he commented. “It is just sad that we’ve allowed the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed to become this.”
Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Cram addressed the events in a Monday news conference, highlighting the aggressive behavior of the crowd. “They physically went after some of our officers,” Cram said. “There’s officers in the car, they’re jumping on the windshield. They’re physically doing damage. They don’t care about your safety, their own safety. If you’ve all seen the videos with their behavior, they really don’t care. It’s just about how much chaos can we cause?”
Cram described how officers were trapped inside a patrol vehicle as a mob swarmed them. He emphasized that police were “definitely targeted” during the incidents, with five Philadelphia police vehicles sustaining damage, including broken windshields and flat tires. One officer suffered minor injuries after his patrol car was struck by another vehicle, which fled the scene.
