A popular young adult ministry at a Franciscan monastery in Detroit has undergone a Franciscan rebranding.
St Bonaventure Monestary’s Solanus Casey Center—named after the American-born Blessed Solanus Casey—has rebranded its former ministry Tap Into Life.
The new ministry is called YouFra, short for Youth Franciscans, and will incorporate Franciscan spirituality and maintain focus on service and faith according to a local reports from Detroit Catholic.
The Solanus Casey YouFra chapter officially launched its ministry on January first.
Youth Minister for the Solanus Casey YouFra chapter Maggie Jackson stated in the report that the decision to become an official YouFra chapter to invite young adults “to increase their spirituality and learn more about Fransiscan spirituality.”
“What is a little different from Tap Into Life is YouFra is a little more grounded in the Franciscan spiritual life in the sense it’s connected more closely with the Secular Franciscans,” said Fr Fred Cabras, OFM Cap., who acts as the chapter’s spiritual minister.
He continued: “One of the hopes, obviously not a requirement, is for some of the YouFra members to be one day interested in becoming a Secular Franciscan or joining the first order as a Franciscan brother or sister.”
The YouFra chapter at Solanus Casey Center is one of three in the United States.
According to Jackson, five former members of Tap Into Life have each made one-year commitments “to live out the Franciscan values of poverty, chastity, and obedience the best they can according to their station in life.”
“Pretty much it’s declaring we’re going to live our Franciscan spirituality, that we are going to be a member of this group and we’re going to try and bring people to Christ and increase their knowledge of Franciscan spirituality,” she added.
When the members made their commitment in November, as Cabras noted, “there was also a Secular Franciscan professing their final vows in a liturgy together,” effectively binding the ministry to the religious community at St Bonaventure.
