A journalist presently employed by NBC News was apprehended in Jerusalem last week on suspicion of extolling Hamas and celebrating the terrorist organization’s attacks on October 7 live on social media. The arrest occurred in Jerusalem.
At least 1,200 Israelis were killed and hundreds more were abducted as a result of these assaults.
The Jerusalem Post reports that freelance journalist Marwat Al-Azza, age 45, was arrested on Friday.
According to the Israeli publication Haaretz, she is identified as a Palestinian who is a resident of East Jerusalem.
Since last month, police have sought her for interrogation in connection with pro-Hamas Facebook posts. Prosecutors granted police that request last week.
According to Haaretz, Al-Azza lauded Hamas on her Facebook page during the genocide against Israeli citizens.
The newspaper, the oldest still-circulating publication in Israel, reported:
“On October 7, Al-Azza put up posts on her personal Facebook account allegedly supporting Hamas terrorism.
“She wrote on the kidnapping of an elderly woman from a Gaza border community, ‘It’s killing me, it’s a black comedy, the old woman looks happy, a bit of action before she dies.’”
According to additional Facebook posts by Haaretz, Al-Azza compared the ongoing slaughter to a film featuring Hamas militants as the main characters.
“Sirens all the time, the Jews are hiding and the Arabs are out drinking coffee on their balconies,” a post from the NBC-employed freelancer read.
One more post stated, “I feel like I’m watching a movie where the director is Palestinian and the protagonists are from Gaza.”
The Post reports that Al-Azza allegedly complied with police and “arrived ready for arrest” when summoned.
Additionally, she purportedly verified to investigators that she was the author of the Facebook posts.
The nature of the charges against Al-Azza is unknown; however, she is being accused by the police of “serious offenses.”
A Jerusalem police representative issued the following statement following Al-Azza’s detention and appearance before a judge:
“These are very serious offenses during a time of declared war when the respondent lives and makes a living in the same country that is under attack and yet chooses to incite and glorify the horrible acts committed against civilians.”
An attorney for the reporter told the Post that Al-Azza has been cooperative.
“This is a normative woman, engaged in journalism, and her role is very important to everyone,” the attorney stated. “She was asked in her investigation about her work. I believe that in the things attributed to her, she cooperated fully. She did not try to hide, saying ‘I had a hacker.’”
The attorney requested her immediate release.
In lieu of this, she was confined for an additional four days subsequent to her apprehension by a magistrate.
