Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf has accused author JK Rowling of “spreading disinformation,” in the wake of the country passing an extreme ‘hate crime’ law, despite the fact that all Rowling has done is continue “calling a man a man,” in her own words.
Speaking at Glasgow’s Prestwick Airport on Saturday, Yousaf said “There’s deliberate misinformation being peddled by some bad actors across Scotland – it’s hardly surprising the Opposition seek to do that.”
After massive backlash to the hate crime law for being way too broad, and police being trained to apply it even to public performances, Yousaf had the gall to claim it actually protects free speech.
“What we’ve got is a piece of legislation that in the actual Act itself, explicitly in black and white, protects freedom of expression, freedom of speech,” he stated.
He continued, “At the same time, it makes sure that it protects people from hatred being stirred up against them, and that is really important when we have far too many incidents of hatred that can be because of their age, disability, sexuality or religion.”
As we previously highlighted, Yousaf argued that some graffiti that appeared near his house, aimed at him, was justification for the “zero tolerance” law.
“There’s no place for that in Scotland, and you have to send a really strong signal that the law will protect you,” Yousaf further proclaimed.
When asked what he would say to JK Rowling and other critics, Yousaf said “I would tell them to stop spreading disinformation. It isn’t going to help anybody.”
“This is a piece of legislation that was passed by every single political party in Scotland, minus the Conservatives,” he added.
Where is the disinformation?
Last week, after Yousaf labeled Rowling’s opinions as”offensive, upsetting and insulting to transgender people,” Rowling hit back, calling his policies “bumbling incompetence and illiberal authoritarianism,” adding that he will “get his richly deserved comeuppance” when Scottish people vote.
On a visit to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, Yousaf said the description by Rowling was “ludicrous.”
Meanwhile, Rowling has published a lengthy post on X explaining what she believes a woman is.
Respondents praised Rowling for the eloquence of the post.
