Law enforcement apprehended an illegal immigrant in West Valley City, Utah, for allegedly attempting to abduct a 13-year-old girl from a local school.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Miguel Angel Vega Sedano, now faces charges of child kidnapping and forging documents, The Post Millennial reports.
Granite School District Police took swift action after the child’s parent reported concerning messages exchanged between Sedano and their daughter on social media.
The messages indicated plans to meet after school, prompting the authorities to intervene before any harm could occur.
“On Friday afternoon, the parents of a 13-year-old student notified school administrators and Granite Police just prior to the end of school, that an adult male had befriended their child online and made plans to meet in person,” stated the school district in a released statement reported by ABC4.
“We are grateful the student disclosed the conversation to their parents and the student was not harmed,” the statement added.
The suspect, identified as a citizen of Peru, currently resides in Salt Lake City County Jail as the investigation unfolds. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with social media, prompting authorities to urge parents to closely monitor their children’s online activities and promptly report any inappropriate contacts to law enforcement.
“This is an unfortunate, but very real, reminder of the dangers of social media. … We highly discouraged, giving minors access to social media and respectfully request that if parents or guardians are unable to monitor their child’s smartphone and social media use, they restrict access to it,” the school district’s statement continued. “If your student is inappropriately contacted by strangers on social media or the internet, contact law enforcement immediately.”
During a post-Miranda interview with West Valley City police, Sedano confessed to knowingly communicating with the girl and intending to pick her up from school without her parents’ knowledge or consent.
Police discovered fraudulent documents, including a social security card and a U.S. permanent resident card in his possession.
Sedano revealed that he obtained the fraudulent documents from a family member in Arizona, not through any official government channels. Moreover, he admitted to being in contact with another 13-year-old girl and meeting her at least three times, leading investigators to work on identifying and locating her, potentially leading to additional charges.
