A massive container ship lost propulsion power in the waters around New York City and was brought to a rest near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Friday night — less than two weeks after failure on another massive cargo vessel caused it to smash into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that its Vessel Traffic Service received a report that the 89,000-ton M/V APL Qingdao lost propulsion about 8:30 p.m. as it traversed the Kill Van Kull — the shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey.
An image shared on X by John Konrad, CEO of maritime-focused news outlet gCaptain, shows the 1,100-foot APL Qingdao floating uncomfortably close to the span that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island.
Konrad announced: “BREAKING: A NY tugboat captain has reported to @gCaptain “container ship APL QINGDAO lost power while transiting New York harbor. They had 3 escort tugs but 3 more were needed to bring her under control. They regained power & were brought to anchor near the verrazano bridge.””

“The ship is registered in Malta and is owned and operated by the large French shipping company @cmacgm,” Konrad explained.
“One major difference between Baltimore and New York is the US Coast Guard operates Vessel Traffic Service in NY. VTS is like air traffic control. They monitor all ships and tugs and can respond quickly to emergencies. Baltimore did not have VTS service,” he added.

UPDATE: incident has been confirmed by the US Coast Guard: “Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service New York received a report from the M/V Qingdao around 8:30pm, Saturday, that the vessel had experienced a loss of propulsion in the Kill Van Kull waterway,” a Coast Guard spokesperson told The NY Post in a statement Sunday.
The ship departed NY and is heading to Norfolk. Questions remain:
Did the French mega-conglomerate @cmacgm owner send representatives to investigate?
Will the USCG release the ship inspection report?
Did the USCG get the black box VDR so we can learn lessons on what was done right?
Will the NTSB investigate or write a report?
Has @SecretaryPete ordered @DOTMARAD to conduct a study of ship power outages nationwide?
Is DOT and the Army Corps of Engineers working to study vulnerabilities at other bridges?
Tugboats saved the day this time. Has the USCG mandated tugboats at other ports until a bridge vulnerability study can be conducted?
Will Navy salvage and Army Corps (or local ports) purchase channel clearance dredges, salvage ships and cranes and place them inside vital ports so harbors can be reopened quickly if bridges are attacked?
Will @DOTMARAD expand its marine highway and ferry subsidies so traffic can be rerouted if bridges close?
Will the @SecDef order a study of the military consequences of downed bridges like Maritime Commandant Mark Buzby and Trump’s NSC asked them to do in 2018?
Vessel Traffic Services VTS (maritime’s version of Air Traffic Control) helped saved the day here, after Sully Sullenberger’s flight and during the evacuation of Manhattan after 9/11. Will Congress fund VTS service in Baltimore, Norfolk, San Diego, Mayport and our other critical military ports?
Will the Congressional Research Service conduct a study of the consequences of decreased Coast Guard and @DOTMARAD funding to our ports?
Have the Department of State and USCG representatives at the UN’s @IMOHQ demanded a study of ship power outages so we can learn how common these are?
It’s been two weeks since the Baltimore bridge disaster and, as far as I know, the answer to all the above questions is: NO
What other questions need to be asked?
Who in congress is willing to ask these questions?
