A judge on Friday delayed former President Donald Trump’s hush-money criminal trial by 30 days to give his defense lawyers time to go through a large amount of recently obtained evidence from a previous federal investigation on the matter.
Judge Juan Merchan agreed to a 30-day postponement and scheduled a March 25 hearing to address questions about the Justice Department evidence dump.
The Justice Department had notified Trump’s legal team and the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg that it planned to produce 15,000 records of potential evidence on Friday. The DOJ investigated the hush-money payment matter while Trump was president.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had already opted out of charging Trump over the hush money allegations in 2019, and the Federal Election Commission also tossed its investigation into the matter in 2021.
The report explains that federal prosecutors have already provided at least 104,000 pages of records — 74,000 of which initially went just to Bragg’s office and not to Trump’s lawyers. However, Bragg’s office then shared those 74,000 pages with Trump’s lawyers as well.
On Thursday, Bragg had agreed to the 30-day delay, to allow Trump’s legal time time to sift through the massive document dump.
Judge Juan Merchan, 60 was born in Columbia and immigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was six years old. He grew up in Queens. He has reportedly donated to the Democrat Party and to Joe Biden.
Merchan has presided over a number of other Trump-related cases, including a 2022 case against the Trump Organization, the “tax fraud” case against Trump’s former financial chief Allen Weisselberg, and the fraud case against former Trump advisor Steve Bannon.
