House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) agreed on Tuesday to wait until next week to send articles of impeachment for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate to relieve the pressure of causing Senators to rush a trial right before they leave for their home states over the weekend.
Johnson had intended to send the articles on Wednesday.
“To ensure the Senate has adequate time to perform its constitutional duty, the House will transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate next week. There is no reason whatsoever for the Senate to abdicate its responsibility to hold an impeachment trial,” Johnson’s spokesperson Taylor Haulsee said.
Senate Steering Committee Chairman Mike Lee (R-UT) said he was “grateful” for the cooperation from Johnson.
“We don’t want this to come over on the eve of the moment when members might be operating under the influence of jet-fume intoxication,” Lee said.
“It’s much better for us to do this at the beginning of a legislative week rather than toward the end of one and I thank him for doing that,” he added. Mayorkas was impeached months ago for his failure to secure the U.S. southern border.
