Former President Donald J. Trump slammed Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) who joined GOP lawmakers who have recently resigned, shaving down the party’s already razor-thin majority to one vote.
Last month, the Wisconsin Republican announced that he would be stepping down on April 19 rather than doing so immediately which would have allowed for a special election to fill his seat under Wisconsin law, an act that some have seen as intentional sabotage.
“Never forget our cowards and weaklings! Such a disgrace,” Trump said in an Easter Morning post to Truth Social, sharing a link to a Washington Examiner story on Gallagher’s refusal to leave earlier to preserve the Republican majority.

Gallagher joins other Republicans who have already left, including former Speaker Kevin McCarthy who quit after he was ousted in a revolt after selling out to Democrats on a funding bill to avoid a government shutdown in September 2023.
The story shared by Trump cites an anonymous source close to Gallagher who said “throughout this process, including before this decision was announced and his departure date was agreed upon.”
“His decision has not changed,” the source told the outlet which reported that Johnson pleaded with the departing lawmaker to “do anything he can to stay longer” but has apparently been rebuffed.
“After conversations with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position as a member of the House of Representatives for Wisconsin’s Eighth Congressional District, effective April 19, 2024,” Gallagher said in a March 22 statement.
“I’ve worked closely with House Republican leadership on this timeline and look forward to seeing Speaker Johnson appoint a new chair to carry out the important mission of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. My office will continue to operate and provide constituent services to the Eighth District for the remainder of the term,” he added.
If Gallagher had left before April 9, a special election would have been held but by not doing so until ten days later, the seat will now stay vacant until the new Congress gets seated in January 2025.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who is a fiercely loyal ally of Trump called for Johnson to expel Gallagher in time to save the seat as the party clings to its precarious advantage of a mere one vote to prevent the unthinkable: Speaker Hakeem Jeffries.
“Speaker Johnson should be forcing Mike Gallagher to leave early so that his district can hold a special election, and any strong Republican Speaker of the House would expel a member for leaving our razor-thin majority in such a delicate, delicate state,” Greene said during an appearance on Fox News. “We cannot allow — we cannot allow this.”

The congresswoman is also applying the pressure on Johnson after she introduced a motion to vacate, potentially setting up the removal of the disappointing leader who like McCarthy, has been a valuable tool of President Joe Biden and Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
