Top Republican lawmakers reacted with outrage to the unprecedented indictment of former president Donald Trump on Thursday as part of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s years-long investigation.
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg has been investigating Trump for hush money payments made leading up to the 2016 presidential election.
A multitude of Republicans from both the House and the Senate are speaking out on Twitter, voicing their outrage over the indictment of Trump.
However, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has remained silent. McConnell did tweet earlier on Thursday about the Army helicopter accident, but as of this report, he has not released any statement about Trump’s indictment.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tweeted: “Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election. As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump. The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) tweeted, “The sham New York indictment of President Donald Trump is one of the clearest examples of extremist Democrats weaponizing government to attack their political opponents. Outrageous.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) tweeted, “Tonight’s indictment of Donald Trump isn’t about the law. It’s about power. Raw power. It’s the Democrat Party telling the nation they will stop at nothing to control the outcome of the next presidential election. It is an assault on our democracy, pure and simple.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) also condemned the indictment of Trump, writing, “The Democrat Party’s hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds. The “substance” of this political persecution is utter garbage. This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system.”

From his official senate account, Cruz added, “Today marks a turning point in our country. The indictment of Trump is a moment in the death of the rule of law. Our Founders are weeping – law is supposed to be fair, regardless of political party. It is not meant to be used as a weapon to attack your political enemies.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Ia.) hotly condemned Bragg, first tweeting, “Reported indictment of Pres Trump highlights increasing politicization of the state & federal justice system Its alarming. We must reverse this frightening trend.”

In a second Twitter post, Grassley wrote, “Bragg instead of a weak case against trump ought to do what he was elected to do Prosecute the felonies he reduced to misdemeanors. If he did he wld reduce exploding crime in NYC.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) tweeted, “This indictment doesn’t pass the smell test. The Department of Justice already looked into the facts and decided there was no case to be made against President Trump. This is the same District Attorney who is notorious for letting violent criminals off the hook in Manhattan, but has been laser-focused on pursuing a politicized prosecution of a former president. Politics should never tip the scales of justice, and Congress has every right to investigate the conduct and decision-making of the Manhattan D.A.’s office.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) had a warning for Bragg.
“Wonder if DA Bragg remembers Durham DA Mike Nifong who withheld exculpatory DNA tests on the Duke lacrosse players. He was subsequently forced out of office, disbarred, and convicted of contempt of court….” Paul tweeted.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) tweeted, “With all the problems facing our country — many exacerbated by Radical Left governance — now a George Soros funded D.A. issues a political indictment against a former president. Leftists are destroying America.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel also spoke out on Twitter, writing, “When our justice system is weaponized as a political tool, it endangers all of us. This is a blatant abuse of power from a DA focused on political vengeance instead of keeping people safe.”
