Donald Trump’s endorsement helped catapult Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to victory in 2018.
But the two former allies went at each other’s throats during the GOP Presidential Primary.
And Ron DeSantis made one promise about the November election to his supporters that caught Donald Trump by surprise.
Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump see eye-to-eye on the issues that matter to conservative voters.
But that did not stop them from viciously attacking each other during the 2024 GOP Presidential Primary race.
After DeSantis helped Republicans turn Florida from a swing state to a solid red state with his 19-point landslide re-election victory in 2022, Donald Trump viewed him as his only real threat to securing the GOP nomination.
Trump started attacking DeSantis in the days leading up to the Midterm elections by dubbing him with nicknames like “Meatball Ron” and “Ron DeSanctimonious.”
DeSantis returned the fire after he entered the Presidential Primary and spent most of his campaign attacking Trump on a number of issues.
He ripped Trump for running up the deficit with his COVID bailouts and for placing Dr. Anthony Fauci in charge of the nation’s pandemic response.
He also reminded voters that Donald Trump never followed through on his promise to secure the border and went back on his vow to lock up Hillary Clinton.
DeSantis failed to gain traction and eventually dropped out of the race after the Iowa Caucus and endorsed Donald Trump over RINO Nikki Haley.
But DeSantis is a man of his word.
During the Primary, he signed the loyalty pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee, no matter who it was.
And now DeSantis is going beyond sticking by his word and recently revealed his plans to help Donald Trump raise money to defeat Joe Biden in November.
“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told donors and supporters at an appreciation retreat over the weekend that he would help fundraise for former presidential rival Donald Trump, two sources familiar with the details told CNN,” CNN reported. “The appreciation retreat, which was held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, was for large donors, major fundraisers and finance committee members of the DeSantis campaign.”
Texas businessman Roy Bailey told reporters that DeSantis is “committed to helping Trump in any and every way.”
“We are going to follow his lead, and we’re excited to do everything we can to get Trump elected,” Bailey said. “If we can unlock and motivate our donors for Trump and put more fuel in his tank, that’s what we want to do, and that’s what we need to do to make sure Biden is not reelected.”
Of course, thanks to DeSantis’ leadership, Florida is no longer a major swing state in Presidential elections.
“This is not going to be a state that’s competitive in November, and that’s just the reality,” DeSantis said in March. “So, I don’t anticipate there being much campaigning here for the top of the ticket.”
“How I can help nationally, I want to be able to do that, I don’t know exactly,” DeSantis added.
DeSantis will now help raise money for Trump’s race against Joe Biden.
