Seemingly healthy mother of two, Stefanie Smith, 41, “died suddenly” while flying home to Indiana following a Dominican Republic vacation.
The New York Post reported that Smith was “seemingly the picture of health,” and was seen sipping poolside mojitos and enjoying steak dinner a week before her death.
Smith began convulsing in her seat shortly after boarding the aircraft from the DR back to the states. The plane was diverted to Turks and Caicos where the mother was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“We were sitting in Miami on our layover. The boyfriend called and said that he had something to tell us. He said Stefanie had died. She’s gone and he wasn’t sure what happened,” Smith’s traveling partner Maria Yannotti told The Daily Mail.
“He said he looked at her and her head was tilted back into her seat. Her eyes were rolled into the back of her head and he thought she was making fun of him at first,” she continued. “Then she started convulsing and that’s when he called for help and they performed CPR and the pilot decided to make the call to land.”
“It floored me. I was in complete shock. I had been texting her just minutes before we received that phone call,” Yannotti added.
ABC News says Smith died from a carotid artery dissection in her neck, and forensic pathologist told the family the results of the autopsy suggest no foul play was involved.
Smith’s brother Chris Volz told the media outlet “It was truly a tragic medical event that happened.” He also told ABC that Smith’s body was expected to be returned to the U.S. the following week.
“The level of drinking never went beyond what I would call a nice little buzz,” Yannotti told The Mail referencing their trip. “We pretty much had the same drinks.”
The Post has since emphasized the mysteriousness of Smith’s passing, highlighting that the mother went jogging every morning of her vacation until becoming fatally ill.
Some users on social media have made speculations and exchanged theories regarding Smith’s strange death. Pointing out that something is not adding up with the mother’s sudden fatality while appearing healthy on all fronts.
“These incidents are happening more and more often on flights. In this case, it seems she had a new sudden onset seizure,” wrote William Makis on X. “COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines are known to cause seizures and new seizure disorders in those with no prior history.”
Others are not buying into the media’s consensus that Smith died of natural causes. They claim that there must be more to the story, considering her happy and healthy persona.
“Stefanie was a daughter, sister, best friend, and an amazing mother of two beautiful children,” read a fundraising site aimed at raising money for her left behind children. “The love she shared with Coen and Macee cannot be measured or described in words. Also, her endless love for her family, friends, and community will leave a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.”
