The man who became known as “the face” of St. John’s University has FINALLY retired.
After 61 years.
Longtime Vice President Joseph Sciame, who is now age 82, helped educate generation after generation of students on campus.
St. John’s University spokesman Brian Browne, who began his own career working for Sciame, called Joe a “great ambassador.”
“If there were a Mount Rushmore-like memorial for St. John’s University, it would feature Joe Sciame’s face.”
Perhaps Sciame’s greatest achievement was the relationship he built with Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Berlusconi always felt indebted to Sciame because when Berlusconi’s daughter attended the university, Sciame kept the news hidden from newspapers and paparazzi.
Sciame is a St. John’s alumni himself.
He started working for the university all the way back in April of 1962, according to his Linkedin page.
To put that into perspective, the New York Mets MLB franchise didn’t play its first ever game until that same month.
“It’s been incredible,” Sciame said about his time at the second-largest catholic university in the nation.
“St. John’s University allows people to be who they are, thanks to education and a spirit of service.”
“I helped so many people without even realizing it,” he said after retirement tributes started pouring in.
“It’s a good run but I’m still going. As long as the lord gives me an opportunity to do good stuff, I do it,” the Army vet said.
Every organization needs good leaders like Joe Sciame to exist, but to say that Joe went above and beyond during his years of service would be a tremendous understatement.
He isn’t known as “Mr. St. John’s” for nothing, it took a lot of hard work and dedication to gain that reputation.
