Potatoes weren’t the only things roasted for breakfast in South Boston Sunday, when the state’s senior U.S. senator used her time at the microphone to tell everyone in an overcrowded room exactly what she thought about spending the morning with them.
“Daylight savings was last weekend, we lost an hour; now we’re about to lose the next three hours,” U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren cracked during state Senator Nick Collins’ St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast in Boston.
This year’s irreverent breakfast, an annual tradition which brings together many of the state’s elected officials for hours of ribbing over pastries and eggs, was less a roast of those present than it was an opportunity for the politicians that remain in the state to make fun of those who have left for, shall we say, “greener pastures.”
“Everyone’s favorite punching bag, Charlie Baker, isn’t here. What jokes are even worth saying anymore without him being here?” state Senate Pres. Karen Spilka said. “It’s fine. It seems like everybody is leaving public office these days to make a ton of money. Charlie is moving on to the NCAA. I’m guessing that is why he did not support the millionaire’s tax.”
In addition to Baker, though he was also absent, former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was the subject of ribbing about his choice of jobs. Walsh, after leading the U.S. Department of Labor for the first years of the Biden administration, announced in February he would leave the federal government for a lucrative gig with the National Hockey League Player’s Association.
“He’s getting the puck out of Washington,” Warren said.
Jim Lyons, the ousted leader of the MassGOP, was also the target of several jokes from the entirely Democratic gaggle of politicians.
“Lyons is also getting ready for his new job: making license plates at Walpole,” Spilka said, referencing the state corrections facility there, MCI-Cedar Junction.
State Auditor Diana DiZoglio stole the show with a surprisingly well sung rendition of Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine,” directing her song at Spilka and state House Speaker Ron Mariano. DiZoglio recently announced her office had begun an audit of the Legislature with which both legislative leaders have yet to indicate they will comply.
“The people want sunshine!” she sang.
Governor Maura Healey mostly took the high road and made herself the butt of several jokes, starting the show by placing a “swear jar” on the head table and promising to put money into it each time she referenced her career as a basketball player or the MBTA.
Several speakers, apparently not informed in advance of the jar’s arrival, ran out of cash while at the podium.
