A University of Georgia student is beginning to recover in a hospital after experiencing a brain hemorrhage while on spring break in Mexico, according to local reports.
UGA senior Liza Burke’s family had created a GoFundMe to get donations for Burke’s transportation from the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was on life support for several days.
“This morning the doctor told us to expect some good days and some bad,” Burke’s mother, Laura McKeithen told McClatchy News on Wednesday. “I would say today is a good day!”
Florida doctors removed the student’s temporary pacemaker and halted all medications except those for pain.
McKeithen said that her daughter was breathing on her own and “squeezing hands, wiggling toes, and even lifting her head from the pillow.
On March 10, Burke had been eating breakfast when she experienced a headache.
In the description of the GoFundMe for the student’s medical needs, Burke’s friend Jennifer Ritter wrote, “A few hours later, her friends called the doctor because they couldn’t wake her. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she was diagnosed with Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which cause her brain to hemorrhage.”

On Facebook, Burke’s friend Peyton Ware wrote, “My friend Liza Burke needs our help! She is sunshine personified, authentic to her core, and has never met a stranger. She is one of the first friends I made at UGA, and we often worked together. She has made my experience at UGA better and she made going to work everyday better. I love her dearly. She’s a fighter and still has so much to give to this world. All of her gofundme is helping her family with the cost of the lifeflight from Mexico to to the Jacksonville Mayo Clinic and her medical bills; please give if you can and pray for Liza and her full recovery.”
