MSNBC’s Ari Melber tore into “cop-out” Mike Pence on Friday for failing, it would seem, to throw enough mud at his former boss, Donald Trump after Pence was asked about Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol “riot.”

Melber noted what he described as Trump’s “outrageous effort to blame” Pence — “the person who was targeted for assassination,” according to “The Beat” host — for the so-called “insurrection.”
As BizPac Review reported, the former president blamed Pence for the Capitol breach as he headed for his rally in Iowa on Monday.
“Had he sent the votes back to the legislatures, they wouldn’t have had a problem with Jan. 6, so in many ways, you can blame him for Jan. 6,” Trump told reporters aboard his private plane.
“Had he sent them back to Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, the states, I believe, number one, you would have had a different outcome. But I also believe you wouldn’t have had ‘Jan. 6’ as we call it,” he stated. “He had the right to send them back, otherwise they wouldn’t have changed the Voting Act. They all said, ‘He didn’t have any rights at all, he was a human conveyor belt, he had no rights even if it was fraud.’ And then the day after he did it, they said, ‘Now we’re going to change it so he doesn’t do it.’ Meaning, you understand that, meaning he had the right to do it.”

On Thursday, Pence appeared on Fox Business, and was asked by host Larry Kudlow, “Do you think former President Trump incited violence or incited an insurrection?”
Melber played the former vice president’s response.
“Well, look there was a riot at the Capitol that day and there were many causes. I do think that the president’s reckless words that day endangered all of us that were at the Capitol,” Pence said. “We were able to reconvene the Congress the very same day and complete our work under the Constitution of the United States. But I’ll let history be the judge of those matters and the American people can each have their own opinions.”
“That’s a cop-out,” claimed Melber. “And it misses that, history’s happening now, especially if you want to be a leader. You are going to be a part of forging history or bowing out or letting it go the wrong way. In our system of government, that’s how these things work.”
The host noted that “courts and juries have convicted some of the worst attackers from January 6, convicted them of sedition.”
“So let me be clear to Mr. Pence,” Melber stated. “We don’t need to wait for history to judge. Those convicts have been judged and condemned.”
Pence, he claimed, “is on the wrong side of history.”
Melber’s summation of the ever weaselish Mike Pence was spot on. Nothin’ to see there. A shaky, spit-dampened fingertip to the changing winds illustrates zero courage, moral or otherwise. Well argued, @TheBeatWithAri

“The problem for Mr. Pence is it turns out he knew earlier than most people about how it was worse than it looked, that there were plots in advance,” Melber said. “He initially helped hide them. He was secretly testing out, talking to other officials about whether he might even join them. Then there’s law enforcement, how to keep us safe. And that’s where Pence is right now on the wrong side of history.”
“Remember,” he continued, “he used to help oversee the federal government. Now, he is actively trying to duck its request for basic facts about that day. He is fighting a DOJ subpoena.”
“How can history hold anyone accountable if a key witness is actively undermining that search for truth?” Melber asked.
