The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has offered Donald Trump the opportunity to surrender as part of a pre-negotiated bail package ahead of his likely indictment — but the former President has yet to agree in a move that has set up a legal showdown, Knewz.com has learned.
It is widely expected Trump will be charged for his role in the payment of hush money to adult star Stormy Daniels, who claimed she had an affair with Trump in 2006.
The criminal charges could happen as soon as next week, multiple sources said. (Trump has denied he had a relationship with Daniels and vowed he “did absolutely nothing wrong” in a recent post on Truth Social.)
Fox News reported Friday that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg had asked for a meeting with law enforcement, including the United States Secret Service, the organization charged with protecting the former president, ahead of the possible indictment.
The proposed meeting — yet to be scheduled — was to “discuss logistics for some time next week, which would mean that they are anticipating an indictment next week,” a source familiar with the planning said.
Knewz.com has learned those logistics center around whether Trump will voluntarily surrender at a police precinct in Manhattan and be arrested on a criminal complaint, Knewz.com has learned. Trump would then be booked and transferred to Manhattan Criminal Court to be arraigned on the charges.
“Bragg wants Trump to do a perp walk and be handcuffed,” a law enforcement official told Knewz.com of what they predicted would be an “extraordinary” event.
“This case would mark the first indictment of a former president and will doubtless upend the 2024 presidential race. It’s problematic, divisive, and historic.”
If Trump does not agree to Bragg’s demands, it will set up a scenario whereby he will be arrested.
A political source said: “This case is a political tinderbox. Democrats will barely be able contain their excitement after Trump is charged, while Republicans — whether they are Trump supporters or not — will be outraged in equal measure.”
“The one thing they likely both will agree upon is that this will galvanize Trump voters and fundraising efforts,” the source added. “Trump will use this prosecution to double down on his campaign and portray himself as a victim of yet another political witch hunt.”
A grand jury was convened earlier this year by Bragg’s office after an almost six-year investigation marred by fits and starts over any prosecution.
The case centers on a $130,000 payment to Daniels, which was made in the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney and fixer. Cohen was reimbursed by Trump.
Legal experts have suggested the case will likely face challenges.
“Even if Mr. Trump is indicted, convicting him or sending him to prison will be challenging,” The New York Times reported on March 9.
“The case against the former president hinges on an untested and therefore risky legal theory involving a complex interplay of laws, all amounting to a low-level felony.”
While hush money is not criminal, prosecutors will argue that the $130,000 payment to Daniels was an improper donation to the Trump campaign.
The former president took to Truth Social early Saturday morning indicating that he will be arrested on Tuesday.
He wrote, in all caps: “NOW ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE, WHICH HAS ALLOWED NEW RECORDS TO BE SET IN VIOLENT CRIME & WHOSE LEADER IS FUNDED BY GEORGE SOROS, INDICATE THAT, WITH NO CRIME BEING ABLE TO BE PROVEN, & BASED ON AN OLD & FULLY DEBUNKED (BY NUMEROUS OTHER PROSECUTORS!) FAIRYTALE, THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!”
Needless to say, Trump is on edge and is taking issue with the legal dispute.
