The uproar in the Middle East and Persian Gulf soon could move at hypersonic speed.
Knewz.com has learned about reports that Houthi rebels in Yemen have acquired hypersonic missiles, which can be fitted with nuclear warheads.
The report came Thursday, March 14 from a news service in Russia, where officials have bragged about using such weapons against Ukraine. RIA Novosti gave no source for its report besides “a military official” close to the Houthis.
“The group’s missile forces have successfully tested a missile that is capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 8,” the Russian report reviewed by the Associated Press said.
If the report is accurate, the source of the Houthis’ hypersonic missile is likely Iran. The Tehran government reportedly has provided many missiles that Houthis have used against ships, even though officials there deny it.
RIA Novosti added the Houthis “intend to begin manufacturing [the missiles] for use during attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as against targets in Israel.”
Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi hinted at the missiles in February when he said his rebels “have surprises that the enemies do not expect at all.”
The Houthis claimed a variety of missiles from the old Soviet Union when they seized the Yemeni capital of Sanaa in 2014. A civil war has raged in Yemen ever since.
Iran joined the race to develop hypersonic missiles last June. It announced the Fattah missile, from the Farsi word for “conqueror,” was hypersonic. A second missile with that capability reportedly is under development.
Another new report March 14 claimed Iranian and American officials held indirect meetings in January on reining in the Houthis’ shipping attacks.
According to Britain’s Financial Times, the talks took place in Oman. Both countries sidestepped confirmation of the report.
“We have many channels for passing messages to Iran,” a U.S. State Department statement said.
Iran’s government-run news service reported the discussions were “merely limited to negotiations on lifting anti-Iran sanctions.”
Knewz.com has documented Houthi attacks in the Red Sea since November 2023, which have killed at least three people. They were designed to force Israel to end the Hamas war, yet Israel fights on.
The latest shipping attack was reported March 14. The U.S. military announced the Houthis missed their target.
“The United States Central Command then successfully engaged and destroyed four unmanned aerial systems and one surface-to-air missile in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen,” a statement released to Reuters said.
RadarOnline.com reported in January that a U.S. bombing of Yemen divided Republicans in Congress.
