Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) got into a bit of a tiff with Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Gary Peters (D-MI).
Paul had been recognized to introduce an amendment when Peters cut him off.
Paul was livid with Peters constantly blocking the Republican amendments to favor amendments of the majority.
After a quick break, Paul got up and walked out of the meeting, reports The Hill.
Not Worth My Time
The passive-aggressive nature of Peters showed just how petty politics has become in this country.
The chair had turned the floor over to Paul, then things just went completely off the rails.
When Peters introduced an amendment to counter Paul’s amendment, he lost it.
He stated, “If this is the way you’re going to run the committee, I would suggest that Republicans leave. I don’t see why we should stick around if you’re going to make up the rules. I mean, you’re going to offer up a third-degree amendment.”
Senator Sinema (I-AZ) tried to calm things down, stating, “Take a couple minutes, lower the temperature, just figure out the procedure, reports Fox News.
She continued, “There’s no need for us to turn this committee hearing into a partisan, ugly place like we’ve seen in other committees. We don’t need to do that.”
You can see Paul take a breath, then over the next few minutes he talked to his fellow Republicans, then he just decided he had better ways to spend his day…
Peters, who sat there almost daring Paul to walk out, played nice in the media after the fact. He stated, “I look forward to working with Senator Paul and hopefully we can find common ground to go forward. Some of the amendments he offered were not germane to the substance of the bill that we were dealing with.”
I can only wonder why he did not say that to Paul during the actual hearing.
The Capitol has become the home of petulant children puffing out their chests to see who can get the most headlines.
They don’t work with each other any longer; they are not even interested in trying. This is now all about power and wielding it, period.
