A billionaire Chinese fraud suspect’s $32 million Manhattan apartment burst into flames as FBI agents were combing it for evidence hours after arresting its owner on suspicion of a $1 billion scam.
Guo Wengui’s 18th floor home in the iconic Sherry-Netherland Hotel was consumed by flames shortly after midday Wednesday, about six hours after Guo – a close friend of Steve Bannon – was arrested.
Agents are probing whether the blaze was linked to Guo’s arrest. But they’ve yet to offer further details, including whether it was triggered by a booby trap designed to destroy evidence.
The report states that the two-alarm fire was finally brought under control several hours later.
