Former Representative Pat Schroeder (D-CO), a trailblazer for women’s and family rights and the first woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Colorado, died on Monday night at 82.
Schroeder’s former press secretary, Andrea Camp, told the Associated Press Schroeder suffered a stroke recently and died at a hospital in Celebration, Florida, where she had been living in recent years.
Shroeder was first elected to Congress in 1972 and won reelection 11 times. She represented Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, which is based primarily in the state capital of Denver. In 1997, she retired.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis tweeted Monday, “Tonight I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and mentor Pat Schroeder (1940-2023), who proudly served Colorado in United States Congress from 1973 to 1997. Her wit, wisdom, and great love for our country will be missed, and my condolences to her loving family.”

“#RIP Representative Pat Schroeder (D-CO) Nov. 13, 1995: Rush Limbaugh thought GOP budget ‘was wonderful because it would starve the poor and it would drive Medicare recipients, including his mother, to eat dog food. But not to worry mom, he says, I’m sending you a new can opener. Wow.’”

Reporter Jon Murray wrote, “A major Colorado political trailblazer has died. ‘The first woman elected to Congress from Colorado, Schroeder went on to serve 12 terms. She became one of the most influential Democrats for two decades…’ Pat Schroeder was succeeded as the Denver-based member of Congress by @RepDianaDeGette. DeGette has now served 26 years, longer than Schroeder. Together, these two women have been Denver’s voice in Congress for a half century.”

“Pat wrote this final op-ed for @denverpost in September, a call for more listening. ‘There are no more competing ideas but more competing narratives about blame. ‘Messaging’ has replaced problem-solving and legislative action for common sense solutions.’ This is a deeply reported prepared obit on Schroeder by @washingtonpost, with wonderful anecdotes. ‘I have a brain and a uterus, and I use them both,’ she quipped when one male lawmaker questioned how she could be a wife, mother and congresswoman.”

We are heartbroken to learn of Pat Schroeder’s passing.
As a trailblazer in Congress, she inspired generations of women and championed families and veterans. She had a quick wit, a tireless work ethic, and an incredible legacy, including the Family Medical Leave Act. https://t.co/HvviAny4Kr
