At 9 P.M. EST on Tuesday, President Joe Biden will take the national stage for his annual State of the Union Address. Waiting for him in the audience, however, will be Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) holding a massive white balloon.
The white balloon is in reference to the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the continental United States the past week, eventually being shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday.
President Biden has been ridiculed for his lack of action in allowing the spy aircraft to traverse the North American continent undisturbed. One of those critics is Representative Greene and she is not going to let Biden live down his failure.
“It’s just an innocent balloon….#SOTU” the Georgia congresswoman tweeted on Tuesday alongside a video. In the video, she is seen walking through the halls of Congress with the balloon by her side.
While Greene is clearly attempting to send a message, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has ruled out doing such symbolism. In a video he posted to Twitter on Tuesday, the Californian said he would not rip up Biden’s speech, a move that would mirror former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s stunt during President Trump’s 2020 State of the Union Address.

“You know, I don’t believe in the theatrics of tearing up speeches,” McCarthy said. “I respect the other side. I can disagree on policy. But I want to make sure this country is stronger, economically sound, energy independent, secure, and accountable.”
A lot of people have been asking if I’m planning on ripping up President Biden’s speech tonight. Here’s my answer: pic.twitter.com/WRlAlYgCbs

According to CNN correspondent Manu Raju, McCarthy is expecting his caucus to behave during the address: “We’re members of Congress. We have a code of ethics of how we should portray ourselves but also do our jobs and that’s exactly what we’ll do. But we’re not going to be playing childish games, tearing up a speech. That’s just a political ploy”
On SOTU, McCarthy told me of Rs: “We’re members of Congress. We have a code of ethics of how we should portray ourselves but also do our jobs and that’s exactly what we’ll do. But we’re not going to be playing childish games, tearing up a speech. That’s just a political ploy”

Additionally, the House Speaker told Republicans during a closed-door meeting to not cause a scene explaining that the “cameras are on” and the “mics are hot,” as reported by CNN’s Melanie Zanona.
Ahead of the State of the Union tonight, McCarthy and Republican Party leaders warned Republicans during a closed-door meeting to behave, reminding them that the “cameras are on” and the “mics are hot.”

As President Biden prepared for his State of the Union Address, there is sure to be some theatrics on both sides of the aisle. Greene’s use of a balloon is smart and will be a constant reminder to all Americans watching of Biden’s failure on the world stage.
