On Friday, Governor Kristi Noem (R-SC) doubled down on her commitment to ban Chinese entities from purchasing land within her state as a Chinese spy balloon traversed the continental United States.
“Now more than ever, states need to step up and defend our people from the threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party,” Noem tweeted on Friday in response to news of the Chinese spy balloon. “This is exactly why we need to pass SB 185 and SB 189.”

Noem introduced SB 185 and SB 189 last month which would create a state-level equal to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) in order to regulate the purchase of American land by foreign powers. That committee would be utilized to counter the purchases of vast tracts of land by the Chinese government and its various entities.
“I think all of us can agree as Americans that Communist China shouldn’t be buying up land in the United States. They are an enemy,” Noem said in an interview with Breitbart, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer. “They are an evil government built on Communism and taking away freedom. That isn’t something we should allow to have a presence here in our great country.”
Noem’s doubling down comes as other governors have made moves to block Chinese land purchases. Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) expressed his desire for the Florida state legislature to pass a bill that would block such purchases by Chinese entities.
As Republican governors vow to take action, the federal government led by President Biden has failed to take action and instead has opted to allow the spy balloon to traverse freely within the United States.
“The United States government has detected and is tracking a high-altitude surveillance balloon that is flying over the continental United States right now,” Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement, as previously reported by the DC Enquirer. “NORAD [North American Aerospace Defense Command] continues to track and monitor it closely.”
The balloon is said to not “present a military or physical threat to people on the ground at this time. The balloon is currently traveling at altitude well above commercial air traffic,” according to Gen. Glen Van Herck.
The U.S. military has said that they are confident the balloon belongs to Communist China with an official telling ABC News that “instances of this activity have been observed over the past several years, including prior to this administration.”
Noem’s bold action to counter Communist China in her state should be replicated by governors across the country and most importantly by the Biden administration. President Biden’s lack of action against Chins is endangering America’s interests and without proper leadership, Communist China will see America as weak.
