Columbia University’s orthodox rabbi has told all Jewish students to consider staying away from campus until its safe.
The rabbi told the Jewish students this in a WhatsApp message reportedly sent on Sunday morning.
“What we are witnessing in and around campus is terrible and tragic,” he wrote. “The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy.”
“It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved. It is not our job as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus. No one should have to endure this level of hatred, let alone at school,” he added.

His statement comes amid massive unrest at Columbia.
“The current unrest at Columbia began when the university asked the police to dismantle a ‘Gaza solidarity encampment’ set up by students on the grounds of the university,” according to The Times of Israel. “More than 100 people were arrested as the encampment was dismantled, and anti-Israel protests have been ongoing since then.”
Protesting would typically be OK, except these “protests” have been littered with rampant, blatant antisemitism and hate.
“Anti-Israel activists [have] threatened Jewish and Israeli students with further October 7 Massacres, claimed membership with Hamas, and expressed support for terrorism,” according to The Jerusalem Post.
Below is a perfect example (*Language warning):
Someone sent me this from Columbia tonight. Some Jewish students were holding Israeli and American flags so this girl stood in front of them with the below sign.

This is happening at @Columbia right now.

This reportedly happened Saturday evening.
Meanwhile on Friday, a masked protester was spotted wearing a Palestinian flag while calling for the Oct. 7th terror attack to happen “every day.”
Watch:
“Never forget the 7th of October. That will happen not one more time, not five more times, not 10…100…1000…10,000…The 7th of October is going to be every day for you.”

This sort of blatant, hateful antisemitism has sparked growing backlash.
“You don’t want a ceasefire or peace,” Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican, tweeted Friday. “You want violence, terrorism, and to support thugs who hate America and our great friend Israel.”
“If action is not taken immediately, we must revoke all federal funding and hold these ignorant ‘protestors’ and the university, enabling them accountable for this violent, evil rhetoric,” he added.
“Absolutely disgusting. Not okay in the United States of America,” conservative commentator Megyn Kelly tweeted.
“Just reprehensible these schools can’t get this under control. You can preserve speech and safety by cracking down on things that are not speech. How much do families spend to send students here?” commentator Mary Katharine Ham added.
A typical pro-Hamas @Columbia University student (look at the emblem on the phone). Yes, calling them Hamasniks is not an exaggeration.
They are not “pro-Palestinian.” They could not care less about the people in Gaza. They just want to riot and blame the Jews. pic.twitter.com/sCc0nXk7N5

In separate but related news, a group of Jewish Columbia University alumni have sent a letter to school President Minouche Shafik warning him that violence against Jewish students may very well be imminent.
“It is clear to us that Columbia is now under mob rule — a mob, by the way, that is only interested in attention and chaos, rather than thoughtful dialogue or reasoned debate,” they wrote. “We are, in short, afraid that violence against Jewish students is imminent.”
“We therefore call upon you to immediately enforce the University’s rules of conduct. In addition, we call upon you to immediately close Columbia’s gates so that outside protesters or suspended students currently on campus can be arrested and/or removed. The actions of a few should not be allowed to sully the reputation of this esteemed institution nor jeopardize the futures of the students it serves,” they added.
