A New York man tried to threaten officials into ending their persecution of former president Donald Trump. Now he’s been charged with harassment and terrorism offenses. If he’s convicted he could face years in prison.
On March 24, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron received threatening text messages. The text to James threatened her with “death and physical harm” if she didn’t “cease action” against Trump. It warned her not to “permanently steal” the 45th president’s assets or property, or to imprison him, and added that the sender had a “whole wall of deadly weapons.”
The next day, state police arrested 26-year-old Tyler Vogel of Lancaster, New York, on suspicion of sending the messages. He has been charged with two counts of making a terroristic threat, which is a felony, and two misdemeanor counts of second-degree aggravated harassment. According to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, Vogel has also been put under a temporary protection order.
Cops say Vogel used a paid online information service to track down James and Engoron’s personal contact details. That’s likely to count against him because it suggests his messages weren’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. The New York State Police said the fact he paid for the information shows he planned to carry out his threats if his demands weren’t met. The maximum penalty he faces if convicted is seven years in prison.
The prosecutions brought by James have been a thorn in Trump’s side as he tries to focus on his presidential campaign. He currently owes over $454 million in fines to the state of New York, although he’s appealing that and recently posted a $175 million bond. For now, his assets are safe from seizure — but interventions like Vogel’s aren’t going to help him.
