For maybe the last time, Alex Murdaugh, in a prison jumpsuit instead of the suit he used to wear, shuffled into a courtroom Monday in South Carolina and was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.
Murdaugh was punished – this time in federal court – for stealing from clients and his law firm. The 55-year-old disbarred attorney is already serving a life sentence without parole in a state prison for killing his wife and son.
A report by federal agents recommended a prison sentence between 17 1/2 and just under 22 years.
However, the judge “threw the book” at Murdaugh, giving him an even longer sentence than what prosecutors had recommended.
This is in addition to the sentence he is already serving for murdering his wife and son.
The report explains that the new 40-year sentence for Murdaugh’s financial crimes will run concurrent with the murder conviction, but in the event his murder convictions are overturned on appealed, he would still be stuck in prison serving the sentence for the financial crimes.
CBS News wrote:
U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel said he sentenced Murdaugh to a harsher punishment than suggested because Murdaugh stole from “the most needy, vulnerable people” like a client who became a quadriplegic after a crash, a state trooper who was injured on the job, and a trust fund meant for children whose parents were killed in a wreck.
Fox News quoted Murdaugh as saying at his sentencing Monday, “I do want you to know and all of the victims to know I am filled with sorrow. I am filled with remorse. I am filled with guilt.”
Attorney Eric Bland, who is representing Murdaugh’s victims, wrote in a social media post:
Today was a banner day for Justice. 2 1/2 years ago we asked the court to make sure when this all ended at Alex Murdaugh got a full Cup Of Justice. He got it. Federal Judge Richard Gergle took Alex Murdaugh to the proverbial wood shed.
He gave him an additional 1/3 more prison time than what was asked by the federal prosecutors. He got a total of 40 years and will have to serve 17 years above in state prison than the 23 that he will serve in state prison.
Now, even if the murder conviction gets reversed, he will still spend the rest of his life in either state or federal prison, and never get a fresh breath of air again. In the pantheon of career criminals, he is on Mount Rushmore. He is a convicted double murderer, thief, bank fraud, and income tax evasion. Amen. EB
