Defense Department spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said Friday that the Chinese surveillance balloon hovering over the United States has moved to the central part of the country, but declined to get into specifics about its location.
Ryder said the North American Aerospace Defense Command is closely monitoring the balloon’s location and that it is moving eastward across the U.S.
“The balloon continues to move eastward and is currently over the center of the continental United States. Again, we currently assess that the balloon does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground at this time,” Ryder said.
He said, “It’ll probably be over the United States for a few days.”
Ryder added, “We assess that it does not pose a risk to people on the ground as it currently is traversing the continental United States, and so out of an abundance of caution, cognizant of the potential impact to civilians on the ground from a debris field right now, we’re going to continue to monitor and review options.”
According to the report, the balloon is flying about 60,000 feet above sea level which is higher than a commercial airliner.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed Friday, “The airship is from Communist China. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes. Affected by the Westerlies and with limited self-steering capability, the airship deviated far from its planned course. The Chinese side regrets the unintended entry of the airship into U.S. airspace due to force majeure. The Chinese side will continue communicating with the U.S. side and properly handle this unexpected situation caused by force majeure.”
