On Wednesday, the president of Citizens United, David N. Bossie, wrote an op-ed arguing in favor of aggressiveness on the part of House Republicans while conducting oversight on the Biden administration. The stage for aggressive use of the oversight power of Congress seems to be set. So far, the Biden administration has not been cooperative with House Republicans. As an example of this lack of cooperation, recently, the Justice Department told House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) that “it will not share information about ongoing investigations.”
According to Bossie, since Democrats changed the rules using the January 6 Committee, he recommends that the new Republican majority use the new rules to their full advantage to get as much information from the White House as it can. As Bossie explains in his op-ed, “Americans want answers about our open southern border, Biden’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal, the targeting of parents who attend school board meetings, COVID-19 origins, Biden’s mishandling of classified information and his family’s foreign business ties, and the unprecedented raid of Mar-a-Lago.”
Republicans in Congress seem to be obliging. For example, Republicans have been flexing their oversight muscles with their new majority. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told Republicans to “treat every committee like the Oversight panel.” The House Judiciary Committee has already held a hearing over the Biden administration’s crisis on the southern border.
There is also close coordination between Jordan’s Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman Representative James Comer (R-KY) regarding how to conduct reviews of the White House. NPR reports that under Comer, the Oversight Committee’s investigations will “focus on spending tied to the pandemic relief bills, which he claims didn’t get enough scrutiny when Democrats controlled the House.”

Republicans are also planning to begin investigations of the Biden families’ financial dealings while specifically investigating concerns over President Biden’s son, Hunter, and potential conflicts of interest or illicit activities.
The Judiciary Committee will also be establishing a Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government to investigate recent conduct by executive branch agencies such as the disgraced FBI and the Department of Homeland Security as well as collaboration between tech companies and the federal government.
Moreover, the Republican Party recently moved to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Incompetent Alejandro Mayorkas for the border crisis. However, there are divisions on how to handle this issue.
The new Republican majority will also seek to investigate foreign policy issues such as “strategic competition” with Communist China, the Afghanistan withdrawal, and aid to Ukraine. Bossie’s advice is being followed by Republicans, for now at least. Time will tell if these investigations will be successful, but undoubtedly the Biden administration’s carefree days with Congress are over. In short, President Biden will have some tough questions to answer in the days ahead.
