This week, the political world was turned on its head by the 2024 news. Nikki Haley, Trump’s former UN ambassador, revealed she will run for president. Haley is the first Republican candidate to challenge Donald Trump. And millions of Americans were waiting for the former president’s response.
Will the man attack her, as he’s attacked Ron DeSantis (who is not running, at the moment)? Will he come up with a cruel nickname for her? Will he go after this wife and mother, further alienating swing voters? Reporters asked Trump about what he thought of the news. He said Haley called him first. And this is what he said.
In a conversation with reporters aboard his plane on a campaign trip Saturday, Trump said, “She called me and said she’d like to consider it, and I said, ‘You should do it,’” according to CBS News.
“I talked to her for a little while,” Trump told reporters. “I said, ‘Look, you know, go by your heart if you want to run.’”

This was unexpected! Trump claims Nikki Haley called him first to tell him she was running for president. According to the former president he told her, “You should do it.” He went on to say “go by your heart.”
Obviously, Trump can’t stop anyone from running for president. But more than a few people probably expected him to turn on his former official. Instead, it seems like he is supportive of her run, even though that could mean he loses the nomination.
There could be several reasons for his reaction. First, he might not think she is much of a threat. According to most hypothetical Republican Party primary polls, Trump is leading everyone else. Nikki Haley doesn’t even get 1% in some of them. Trump might be acting gracious, because he doesn’t think she’ll catch up.
But plenty will change the moment she enters the race. There won’t be “hypothetical” polls anymore. Only real polls gauging voters’ opinions. And Haley’s never lost a race. She could quickly gain on Trump, triggering a bitter reaction from the man.
Or, he could be playing a very strategic game. Maybe Trump is hoping Haley gains momentum in the race. Perhaps even wins the support of swing or moderate voters. Then, if he gets the nomination, he makes her his running mate.
A Trump/Haley ticket might be unbeatable. And Trump doesn’t want to burn that bridge. Could that be the reason he’s not upset she is running against him?
Who knows? I guess we’ll find out.
