Russia is now engaged in ‘a war against Nato and the West’, the European Union’s defence chief said yesterday as Canada became the 12th country to commit tanks to Ukraine.
Stefano Sannino, the secretary general of the EU’s external action service, suggested Vladimir Putin had moved beyond his initial ‘special military operation’ and was ‘moving the war into a different stage’.
Mr Sannino was speaking as Canada became the latest country to pledge tanks and Poland said it would give an additional 60 to the 14 it has already committed to the war effort.
“I think that this latest development in terms of armed supply is just an evolution of the situation and of the way Russia has started moving the war into a different stage,” he said, addressing reporters in Tokyo.
In the coming days, Norway and Spain are expected to announce how many Leopard 2s they will send to Ukraine.
Belgium announced a new package of military aid, promising missiles, armored vehicles, machine-guns, and cash, admitting that they have no main battle tanks to match the offers from its Nato allies.
Ukraine is also hoping for Western fourth-generation fighter jets, such as the US F-16, but this prospect remains unlikely.
In response to Moscow shifting the focus of the war to the West, Sannino said Ukraine’s allies are forced to increase and upgrade their military support to Kyiv.
He added that Russia was making “indiscriminate attacks” on cities and civilians.
The World Health Organization tweeted a series of eerie statements, in a series of posts on Twitter:
In a radiological or nuclear emergency, first responders and the workers of the affected facility (e.g. nuclear power plant workers) are at a greater risk of being exposed to doses of radiation high enough to cause acute effects bit.ly/40kIFp5

In radiation emergencies, people may be exposed to radiation at doses ranging from negligible to life-threatening. Excessive exposure to radiation can damage living tissues and organs, governments need to be prepared with treatments available for those in need, fast.

I also stressed that with unprecedented level of global instability and international system being tested to the core, we must work together to defend UN Charter and international law – which includes influencing Russia to stop its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. 3/3
