Big-money donors are beginning to coalesce around former President Donald Trump after he has become the presumptive GOP nominee as he attempts to close the cash-on-hand gap with President Biden, who recently set a high-dollar fundraising record.
This weekend in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump will take part in what is being billed as an “Inaugural Leadership Dinner” that includes several Republican high-profile donors and signals the beginning of a major push to cut into Biden’s cash-on-hand lead.
The event will be led by hedge-fund billionaire John Paulson and will be co-chaired by hedge fund tycoon Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah, oil tycoon Harold Hamm, hotelier Robert Bigelow and casino mogul Steve Wynn.
The report explains that both Bigelow and Hamm had previously donated money to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign, and Hamm had also previously supported Nikki Haley’s campaign.
Now they’re standing behind Trump.
Paulsen told Bloomberg in a recent interview, “Now that President Trump won the primaries, defeating all 10 contenders by a landslide, I think it’s time for Republicans to unite behind him. For that reason, I’m hosting this inaugural event to galvanize the broad support there is for the president.”
Others involved in the fundraising event for Trump on Saturday will include:
- Scott Bessent, founder of the investment firm Key Square Group and former chief investment officer at George Soros’s Soros Fund Management, who is rumored to be a potential Trump cabinet nominee
- Jason Trennert, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Strategas
- Chicago Cubs co-owner Todd Ricketts
- New York Jets co-owner Woody Johnson
- Wilbur Ross, Trump’s former Secretary of Commerce
Donors attending the event can select different levels, with the top being the top being the “Chairman level” of $824,600, which includes “dinner seating at President Trump’s table.”
According to Axios, former first lady Melania Trump will be in attendance. Also three of Trump’s former Republican primary opponents — Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Vivek Ramaswamy and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum – will all be there.
Axios said Trump is on track to raise $43 million at Saturday’s Palm Beach fundraiser, which would far exceed the $26 million Joe Biden raised in New York City last week with the help of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
The Biden campaign is already attacking Trump over the fundraiser, mocking him for his lineup of donors. The Hill wrote:
“If you want to know who Donald Trump will fight for in a second term, just look at who he is having over for dinner Saturday night – tax cheats, scammers, racists, and extremists,” Biden campaign senior spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said.
“Make no mistake, Donald Trump will do the bidding of his billionaires buddies instead of what is best for the American people. He’ll take their checks and cut their taxes, and leave hard working Americans behind, shipping their jobs overseas, gutting Social Security and Government-run Medicare, ripping away health care protections, and banning abortion,” she added.
