Michigan Governor Dictator Gretchen Whitmer defended the killing of unborn babies in abortions Wednesday during her State of the State address, claiming pro-abortion laws are “just good economics.”
Whitmer, a pro-abortion Democrat, was re-elected to office in November along with a new Democrat-controlled state legislature. Together, they have promised to repeal a 1931 state abortion ban and ensure that abortion on demand remains legal in Michigan for years to come.
Speaking at the state Capitol in Lansing, Whitmer made the argument that killing unborn babies in abortions is good for the economy, according to a video of her speech from The Recount.
Portraying abortion as a “freedom” and a “right,” she said: “Protecting these freedoms is the right thing to do, and it’s just good economics. States with extreme laws are losing talent and investment, because you know what? Bigotry is bad for business.”
The Democrat governor promoted killing unborn babies even while promising to work for a “brighter future” for all Michigan residents, State of Reform reports.
“I can’t wait to share my vision for our state as we move towards our bright future, and lay out my plans to lower costs, bring supply chains and manufacturing home to Michigan, and ensure Michiganders have unparalleled economic opportunity and personal freedom,” she said ahead of her speech.

During the address, Whitmer added: “Let’s repeal our extreme 1931 law banning abortion. Let’s repeal other dangerous laws prohibiting people from accessing reproductive healthcare or shaming them for seeking it in the first place.”
Pro-life organizations responded by calling out Whitmer for dehumanizing babies in the womb.
“If you want to hear what bigotry sounds like, ask abortion supporters what they think about unborn babies,” Right to Life of Michigan wrote on Twitter. “Tumors. Parasites. Blobs of tissue. Plenty more to dehumanize them.”
SBA Pro-Life America also criticized the governor for being blind to her own bigotry, writing: “Governor Whitmer, you do realize your abortion absolutism is the definition of bigotry, right? The vast majority of Americans support reasonable, commonsense limits on abortion, whereas you can’t name a SINGLE limit you would support.”
Currently, aborting unborn babies is legal in Michigan for any reason up to viability, and about 30,000 are aborted every year. In recent years, more people are dying in Michigan than are being born, according to a recent report from MLive journalist Taylor DesOrmeau.
There is no truth to Whitmer’s claim that pro-life laws hurt state economies either. Quite the opposite, a recent U.S. Congressional Joint Economic Committee report found that abortions have caused trillions of dollars in economic loss because they destroyed babies who otherwise would have grown up and contributed to society.
The claim that abortion helps the economy is a common one made to justify the deaths of more than 64 million unborn babies to abortion in the past 50 years. But it isn’t true. Quite the opposite, abortion hurts the economy by depriving society of future earners and innovators and individuals of children to care for them in their old age.
In 2018, Dennis Howard, the president of the pro-life group Movement for a Better America, estimated that the United States has a “cumulative GDP deficit of $62.6 trillion” as a result of the 61 million unborn babies who had been aborted up to that year. He estimated the deficit will reach $400 trillion by 2040 if unborn babies continue to be aborted at the same rate.
A few years earlier, Dr. Brian Clowes, director of education and research at Human Life International, calculated that the “direct cost of each abortion to society in terms of lost consumption and taxes paid amounts to, on average, $3,720,000.” Cumulatively, Clowes said that means trillions of dollars of economic loss due to the millions of unborn babies who have been aborted.
