According to ABC News, former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard revealed this week that she turned down an offer from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to serve as his running mate.
The announcement is likely to further fuel speculation that Gabbard will become former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick.
Former congresswoman “respectfully declined” Kennedy’s offer
Gabbard issued a statement to ABC News earlier this week, saying, “I met with Kennedy several times, and we have become good friends.”
“He asked if I would be his running mate,” the former Democratic congressman explained before adding, “After careful consideration, I respectfully declined.”
While Kennedy’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on Gabbard’s statement, a source said to be close with the candidate told ABC News that she received serious consideration.
“There were definitely meetings, but it didn’t work out,” the source added that the campaign “talked to a bunch of people” before adding, “Tulsi’s a rock star no matter what.”
The Associated Press reported late last month that Kennedy ultimately selected attorney and philanthropist Nicole Shanahan to join him on the independent ticket.
Gabbard says she would “be honored” to help Trump
Meanwhile, Newsweek noted that Gabbard has become a popular choice among those placing wagers via the betting websites Polymarket and Betfair.
For her part, Gabbard discussed the possibility of a vice presidential run during a March 11 appearance on Donald Trump Jr. podcast.

“I’d be honored to actually be in a position to help President Trump execute his policies … bringing the experience that I have had of being on the front lines of many of these battles and actually understanding what we’re up against,” HuffPost quoted Gabbard as saying.
Trump and Gabbard discussed foreign policy in February
The former Democrat said she would relish taking steps towards “securing the border, reducing inflation, improving our economy, stopping these Democrats or ― and establishment Republicans ― stopping these warmongers from continuing to push us closer and closer to war.”
“These are things, if I had the opportunity and privilege of being able to serve and support President Trump in actually executing these policies, I’d be honored to do so,” she added.
The Washington Post reported in February that Trump had a meeting with Gabbard in which they discussed foreign policy and defense matters.
