It was not that long ago that Kevin McCarthy announced his resignation from Congress.
Shortly after being removed as Speaker of the House, McCarthy let everyone know his plan to give up his role as Congressman after December 31st, 2023.
McCarthy’s resignation came as a shock to many.
McCarthy provided more insight into why he made the decision that he did in his resignation statement.
“I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started,” McCarthy said in the statement.
McCarthy also went on to say that it has truly been “the honor of a lifetime to represent the great people and communities of Kern, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, Tulare, Fresno and Kings County over the past 17 years, and especially my home town of Bakersfield and the Central Valley of the great state of California.”
Since McCarthy dropped his resignation bomb, there’s been a big question on everyone’s mind.
Who will take his seat in the House of Representatives?
There are two real contestants at play – Republican Vince Fong and Republican Mike Boudreaux.
They plan to duke it out this May to see who will be selected to take the open seat.
So, what do we need to know about Fong and Boudreaux?
As reported by Politico, Fong used to be an employee of McCarthy. He is also backed by former President Donald Trump. Fong works as a state legislator. It has been reported that he is the front-runner of the two candidates.
Boudreaux, however, also packs an impressive resume.
He’s the sheriff of Tulare County, CA. The residents of his county love Boudreaux. Plus, he’s been in the game for a long time.
We will not know who will emerge victorious until this May!
Who do you think will earn the former seat of McCarthy?
