A shocking scandal has just come to light about George Santos, a Republican candidate for Congress in New York. It has been revealed that two years into his marriage to a woman, Santos invited friends to celebrate his engagement to a man, an event that ultimately never took place.
According to The Daily Beast, Santos sent out a Facebook invitation in 2014 for an “engagement dinner” with his then-boyfriend Pedro Vilarva. The invitation, which was shared by Santos’ old roommate, Greg Morey-Parker, stated, “Good evening everyone! As you all may already know Pedro and I have decided to join our toothbrushes! Lol and a very few friends have been selected to share this special moment with us!”
At the time, Santos was already married to a Brazilian woman, as confirmed by public records. The New York City Marriage Index database shows that the couple acquired a marriage license in December 2012, and they divorced in 2019.
Santos, who has run for Congress as an “openly gay” Republican, has been criticized for his lack of transparency about his past. Vilarva confirmed that the engagement party was planned, but stated that he rejected Santos’ proposals, saying, “He asked me 3x but I didn’t accept it. There was never a party [or] anything in regards to it.”
This revelation is just the latest in a series of lies that have been uncovered about Santos’ background. Last month, it was reported that he had lied about his education and his mother’s death. Additionally, Morey-Parker has claimed that Santos had tried to convince him to marry a Brazilian woman so that she could obtain citizenship, and that Santos had promised him he would make money from the deal.
Santos has yet to comment on these recent accusations, but in the past, he has stated, “I am openly gay, have never had an issue with my sexual identity in the past decade, and I can tell you and assure you, I will always be an advocate for LGBTQ folks.”
This scandal raises serious questions about Santos’ past and his integrity. It remains to be seen how this will impact his campaign, but it is clear that there is much more to this story that has yet to be uncovered.
