The Republican National Committee, as we knew it, no longer exists.
After ousting Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, which most of us supported, Trump backed Lara Trump and several surrogates to take over Republican National Committee leadership.
With North Carolina GOP chair Michael Whatley elected as the Chair and Lara Trump installed as the co-chair, staff positions were slashed, and the Republican National Committee was more or less folded into the Trump campaign operations.
Good for Trump, But…
After Whatley and Trump were installed, they immediately announced that roughly 60 people on the Republican National Committee staff would be asked to tender their resignations.
They are portraying this as a money-saving measure to have more for campaigns, but that is not how it is being perceived publicly.
Both Whatley and Trump have already stated they plan on using every penny to help get Trump re-elected, but the natural question to ask is, “What about the rest of the party?”
There are considerable first-time candidates who would typically get campaign help from the Republican National Committee, but there may not be enough money to go around now.
Trump’s campaign and PACs have been pouring money into his legal bills, leaving his campaign with less than $30 million cash on hand.
To give you an idea of how dire a situation that is, Joe Biden just took out a $30 million ad spend to hammer Trump on comments he made about entitlement programs, and he still has almost $100 million in the register.
On top of that, at last report, the Republican National Committee only had about $8 million cash-on-hand, which is nothing in the political world.
Also, folding the Republican National Committee into Trump’s campaign will surely prevent never-Trump Republicans from donating to the Republican National Committee to help down-ballot elections.
Trump surrogates in Congress were celebrating MAGA taking over the Republican National Committee, but trust me, strategically speaking, this was not a smart move and will significantly impact the Republican National Committee’s ability to raise money during this election cycle.
